A Geographical Information System (GIS) is a powerful tool in asset integrity management. It allows all data to be captured and displayed against backgrounds (aerial images/topographical maps etc.) which enables the accurate viewing and analysis of geographical features and data sets.

Once data has been captured (and updated regularly) mapping and analysis can be completed both in house and also by the client utilising desktop GIS viewing software. Examples of what can be achieved include: correlation of DCVG against inline inspection results, establishment of radiation contours and high consequence areas (HCA’s), locating areas of concern and aiding in the formulation of operation and maintenance plans.

What this means to Asset Owners and Operators is the ability to store and manage large amounts of asset data and by utilising GIS software and experience, turn this data into valuable information thus ensuring the safe and efficient management of all assets over their technical lifetime.
